Members of Alloway Burns Club enjoy the topics of two speakers
There was an excellent attendance at the “Auld Alloway” evening.
Despite the weather, the Alloway Burns Club members turned out in their droves to be entertained by two local speakers.
Firstly, author Dr Alasdair Wham spoke about the local railway lines concentrating on the old light railway which ran through Alloway and down to Girvan via Dunure, Maidens and Turnberry, but also describing some of the other lines which had been a feature of the landscape.
During the break for supper, which was kindly provided by the council, members were able to examine the club’s library of books and many old club photos on display. Club president Malcolm Ferguson presented the gentleman responsible for all these photographs, Bill Kerr, with a gift from the club.
The second half of the evening was an account of the building of the Burns Monument in Alloway. Former president, Hugh Farrell, explained the details of the planning and construction process and gave an insight into the personality of the main individuals involved in the build.
Like Dr Wham, his presentation was well illustrated and had the same mixture of information and humour that guaranteed the undivided attention of his audience.
Senior vice- president, Andy Moynihan, gave the vote of thanks followed by Mr Farrell being presented with a cheque for £ 280, which had been raised at the club’s recent Alloway 1759 concert – for the Monument’s refurbishment.
The evening, as always, finished with Auld Land Syne led by the club’s development officer, Bruce Kennedy.
Future events will include the annual Youth Concert and AGM held on Friday, March 24 in Alloway Parish Church halls at 7pm.
There is a warm invitation to all to come along and hear some very talented youngsters perform – after which tea and coffee will be served.
