DONNY BOXING CLEVER FOR TITLES

Rising boxing star Donny McPike has won a Scottish title for the third year in a row.

Donny, 12, won the 2004’ s 38.5kg class at the Scottish schoolboys and schoolgirl­s’ championsh­ips at Ravenscaig.

Donny, from Coylton, beat Mark Murdoch ( Bronx, Edinburgh) by a unanimous verdict in the final.

He now holds three Scottish, two Western district and the Scottish intermedia­te title.

The first year Ayr Academy pupil is a member of North West Amateur Boxing Club in Kilmarnock where he is coached by Ray Connell and Graeme Marshall.

He trains three nights a week at the club but runs and trains in his own gym an additional three days a week. He maintains his weight and has to eat a strict healthy diet when in training.

Donny, who has trained since he was five, is sponsored by various businesses, his biggest and longest backers being Blackwood Plant Hire and The Cobbleshop in Stewarton.

Meanwhile, Doon Valley Boxing Club’s Kian Govan won his third gold of the season, following on titles at the West District and Scottish Novices Championsh­ips. Kian won the 2005’ s 50kg category.

Laura Nicol won the 57k class for 2002 girls after a walkover in the final.

Kieran Smith took silver in the 2004’ s 44.5kg class.

Three Doon elite and youth boxers are heading for a Commonweal­th Games qualifier at Ravenscrai­g on Saturday.

They are Calvin McCord ( lightweigh­t 60kg), Neil McCubbin ( flyweight 49kg) and Arran McGarvie ( bantanweig­ht 56kg).
