CORPSE LEFT ALL NIGHT IN LOCKED PUB TOILET

Cleaner’s shock find next morning

- Stephen Houston

A dead man was left all night in an empty pub.

The victim, aged 53, had been abandoned in the toilet of a pub chain. He was found by a startled cleaner who arrived for work the next day. Bosses at the Wetherspoon-owned West Kirk – a former church – refused to speak about the incident in detail this week.

The body was found inside the premises in Ayr’s Sandgate on Sunday morning. It is understood he was sprawled in a cubicle in the gents toilet.

The giant pub was given a “gold standard” for its toilets less than two years ago in the ‘ Loo of the Year

Awards’. The then manager Terri Hollywood said: “Staff at the pub ensure the toilets are in first- class condition at all times and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors.”

The drinker was in the pub on Saturday night and sources say he had vodka with him when he was found on Sunday.

The duty manager refused to speak about why he could have been left while staff put the lights out and went home.

Sources say workers allegedly checked the toilet, but the cubicle in which he was found was claimed to be “out of order.”

The dead man has not been named.

Ayr Police Inspector Jim Hendrie said: “The next day the chap was found.

“There was nothing suspicious about the death. It was just unfortunate circumstances.”

One prominent licensee, who asked not to be named, said the sad turn of events was “shocking.”

He said: “There is no excuse for it.

“How horrible for this man’s family to know he was allowed to go cold on the floor of a pub toilet.

“There should be questions answered at the licensing board over this.”

Pub spokesman Eddie Gherson said: “We can confirm that a man’s body was found in the toilet at The West Kirk pub in Ayr.

“We pass on our sympathy to the family and friends of the man.

“This was also a shock to all of the staff at the pub.

“We will assist the police in any way we can.”

There was nothing suspicious about the death.
