Step the light fantastic for Maybole

- David Kiltie

Roll up, roll up for a fantastic show of light in Maybole this Saturday.

The Lantern Parade celebrates 500 years of life in the old Carrick capital.

The Maybole 500 committee would really like as many people and organisations as possible in the parade to join with those who have made lanterns featuring the town’s history.

And folk are being encouraged to bring along their own torches to add to the fun.

Taking part in the parade, which will leave Carrick Academy at 7pm, will be the Marquess and Marchioness of Ailsa, Provost Helen Moonie as well as the local MSP, MP and councillors.

It will make its way to Glebe Park where there will be music from Maybole Pipe Band and SheBoom , possibly Europe’s largest women’s drum band, as well as a finale featuring pyrotechnics, music and a bonfire with a wicker structure being burned.

Financial support for the Maybole 500 project has been provided by funds from Ayrshire LEADER, the Heritage Lottery Fund, North Carrick Community Benefit Company, Ayrshire Youth Arts Network and South Ayrshire Council.

The procession will wind its way down the main street with Maybole Pipe Band leading the way and the rhythms of Sheboom Samba Band leading the lanterns created by local children and adults down to Glebe Park for a fiery finale.
