Diggers roll out on the beach
It’s a rocky road ahead at Prestwick beach as efforts get underway to clear piles of rubble.
Residents have been complaining about the coastline being strewn by boulders washed up from Newton shore.
A team is on the case to try and shift the rocks to unveil the sand underneath.
And last week a crew with diggers hit the beach to assess the level of the debris. They dug six one- metre deep holes to find out how deep the rocks had penetrated.
South Ayrshire Council neighbourhood services boss Mike Newall said: “The issue of debris on Prestwick beach is an ongoing challenge, and we’re currently carrying out research to gauge how deep the sand has been compromised.
“To help inform our investigations we recently dug a number of test pits to see how far down stones and other items had penetrated, as part of our wider work to manage the situation in the long- term.
“We’ll be reviewing the findings of this exercise in the coming weeks and will continue to discuss our plans with the local community as we work towards resolving the issue.”
The sand and bricks were tumbled through a sifting machine and separated.
