Apprentice scheme in cash boost

-

Young people looking to get a foothold in the world of work are being encouraged to consider the benefits of a career in the public sector.

In order to enhance the attractiveness of its Modern Apprentice ( MA) programme, South Ayrshire Council is increasing its investment to provide higher salaries and more attractive training packages.

The council currently employs up to 60 Modern Apprentices at any one time.

The roles are in a range of areas including business administration, golf, grounds maintenance, social care, and waste management.

However, in recent years the number of people applying for MAs has been falling, with feedback suggesting the level of available pay was part of the reason.

Following a review of Modern Apprenticeships, councillors have agreed to increase the rate of pay from £ 3.40 per hour to £ 5.55 per hour, with effect from April 1.

Councillor Robin Reid, spokesman for resources, said: “We’re committed to helping our young people gain a foothold in the world of work and this significant increase in annual salary will provide much needed additional support to our Modern Apprentices.

“By increasing our investment we’re opening up the programme to young people who might not otherwise have been able to afford to consider the training.

“We’re also providing a broad range of choice across a number of Council services, offering practical experience in areas ranging from office based skills through to environmental management.”
