Corpse pub in 999 scare 48hrs later

Man, 26, overdosed in loo

- Stuart Wilson

Pub staff who left a corpse in their loo found another punter overdosed in the same toilet – just 48 HOURS later.

The West Kirk on Ayr’s Sandgate was at the centre of its second shock discovery in as many days.

This time, workers at the Wetherspoonowned bar came across a 26- year- old unconscious on the lavatory floor. He had taken a suspected heroin overdose. It followed the death of another drinker in the same pub after he was locked in a cubicle overnight.

Medics managed to save the second man’s life after rushing to the scene and administering rescue remedy Markham.

The back- to- back incidents have raised fears about use of the superpub’s facilities.

One senior trade source said: “It’s almost inconceivable to have two major incidents of this nature in the same toilet just 48 hours apart.

“Thankfully the second man has been saved in the nick of time, but the whole episode raises huge concerns for the trade.”

Ironically, staff who had missed the dead body in their pub were this time hailed for helping to save a life.

They noticed the man missing from his untouched drink for a number of minutes before going to investigate.

And after making the long climb to the bar’s toilets at the back of the premises, they discovered him slumped and unresponsive.

A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon said the man had appeared “fine” when arriving for a drink at 10.50pm last Monday.

They added: “A few minutes after serving, and with his drink still untouched – which was noticed by staff members – he went to the toilet.

“Staff were very alert and aware that he had not returned within a couple of minutes.

“A staff member went to see if he was OK. Unfortunately, he was found unconscious in the toilet. He had been in the pub for less than 10 minutes. The emergency services were immediately called and attended the scene.

“The police were satisfied with the way in which the team dealt with the situation, nothing more could have been done to prevent it, and we are helping the police in every way we can.

“We wish the customer a full and speedy recovery.”
