Setting out stall to boost town’s trade Business booming at first street event

- Michael Reynolds

The sun shone on Troon’s first- ever street market at the weekend.

Shoppers lined the streets to peruse some of the finest local produce on offer – and the market proved so popular that some stalls were sold out long before closing time.

SB Fish offered locally caught lobster, prawns and crab, while Agnes Bakes Cakes was one of the busiest stalls in the market as shoppers rushed to take up her gluten- free, home- baked goodies.

Donna Read, of the Troon Business Association, said: “The focus is on local produce and we were delighted with the variety on offer. With so many towns suffering, Troon is looking at new and innovative ideas to keep retailing fresh and exciting – something not offered in big shopping centres.

“The sun was shining and the street market in the town was packed with visitors and local residents.

“The economic impact spilled over into the town with many local businesses also benefitting from the huge increase in footfall. One cafe reported their busiest Saturday since opening over two years ago.”

The market, a joint effort between the Troon Business Association and Ayrshire Stall Hire, was supported by local politicians as council leader Bill McIntosh, councillors Peter Convery and Phil Saxton and MP Philippa Whitford all dropped by.

Now the TBA hope to build on the success of the first market, and turn it into a regular feature in the seaside town.

Donna said: “The Business Association want to focus on keeping the shop- local movement alive and bringing in visitors to see just how lovely Troon is.

“We have been delighted with the response and we hope the market becomes a permanent feature.”

Troon Street Market will return on Saturday, April 22, from 10am, with organisers promising new stalls to keep shoppers coming back.
