Mentors wanted for town’s youth trust

- Stephen Houston

The ‘ Life’s a Journey’ Team within Girvan Youth Trust, offer support to individual young people who want to develop or learn new ‘ essential life skills’ which will enable them to be more independent in their everyday lives and to recognise and achieve their true potential.

The group are looking to create a bank of local volunteer mentors who will work with young people on a one to one basis and will form a ‘ learning partnership’ to develop practical and essential life skills such as cooking, handling money, theory test practice, car maintenance or anything else important to the young person at the time.

They aim to pair young people and mentors who share similar likes and interests therefore there will be a process of recruitment and training provided for each potential mentor to ensure that the experience will be beneficial to both, the young person and the volunteer.

A spokesman said: “We see this as a great opportunity for local adults who have life skills, trade skills and hobby interests that can be shared with the younger generation of our community. We are looking for Mentors who can spare a couple of hours a week and who have a genuine passion and commitment to ensure that our young people are given as many opportunities to help them become valued and responsible members of their community.
