Marr on the brink of Premiership
Title is set to be clinched at Braidholm on Saturday
Marr Rugby are on the brink of the Premiership after a thumping 76- 0 win over Musselburgh.
And in a glory weekend for the Fullarton club, the 2nd XV wrapped up BT Reserve League One with a 50- 0 win away to Dalziel.
The 1st XV ran in a dozen tries as they swept aside Musselburgh. Now they head to GHA on Saturday where even a defeat without a bonus point would leave second place Edinburgh Accies needing to beat Aberdeen Grammar with a bonus to pip them for the title.
Club president Kevin Quinn said: “I would like to think Marr supporters will follow us to Braidholm in great numbers for what may be another chapter in the club’s history.
“The job we started away back in August is now in our own hands to finish but we know GHA will provide stiff opposition.”
Before a crowd of more than 500, Marr were flying after only five minutes when Dan Law raced in from 25 metres. This set the tone and Conor Bickerstaff burst through for number two.
The third try followed more power play by Marr’s forwards at the set piece scrum.
Winning possession, the ball was spread wide and quick recycling from the breakdown kept possession and with the defence being pulled in an overlap was exploited by Scott Bickerstaff.
Five minutes later, Grant Baird added the bonus point fourth try.
The final try of the first half was created from midway inside Marr’s half.
Winning turnover possession, the ball was fed out to Colin Sturgeon whose mazy running mesmerised the defence as he weaved towards the line making 40 metres before offloading to Angus Johnston who was in close support to end the attack with a try.
The second half almost mirrored the first with Marr’s efforts rewarded with seven tries although Musselburgh never gave up trying.
Marr man of match: Angus Johnston. Tries: Dan Law, Conor Bickerstaff, Scott Bickerstaff ( 4), Grant Baird, Angus Johnston ( 2), Tom Steven ( 2), McKenzie Pearce. Conversions: Colin Sturgeon ( 8).
The 2nd XV were forced to field a much depleted squad of only 17 players with a number unavailable. Jack Scott was switched from stand- off to scrum- half while Ali Walker moved from centre to outside half.
They ran in eight tries to beat Dalziel and now with two matches remaining, have 95 points while nearest challengers GHK sit on 74 and have still to play four matches.
Marr 2nd XV man of match: Ry McInnes. Tries: Ritchie McNicol, Ali Waker ( 2), Robbie Hardie ( 2), Ry McInnes ( 2), Thomas Watkins. Conversions: Jack Scott ( 5).
