Better than Ailsa

Trump’s shock claim on new King course

- Stuart Wilson

The second “world class” golf course at Turnberry is set to top its famous Championship links.

That’s according to resort boss Eric Trump, who says the reborn Kintyre layout will “no longer play second fiddle” to its revered Ailsa sister.

The new track, renamed King Robert The Bruce, is to be unveiled on July 11 on the anniversary of the King’s birth.

And excited Turnberry bosses believe their new masterpiece will become the real deal rather than the poor relation to the Ailsa Open Championship course.

Speaking to the Post on his visit to the resort last week, Eric, 33, said: “What we’re doing on the second course is truly incredible.

“It boasts some of the most spectacular holes that we have here and will no longer play second fiddle in people’s minds.

“From the moment we came here, we knew that reshaping that course was always a huge part of our plans.

“So it is tremendously exciting to be on the verge of showing everyone what we have done.”

Top architects Mackenzie and Ebert, who led the Ailsa makeover, have returned for the Bruce design.

And the Trumps, keen to retain historic links, have chosen to name the course after the man born only a stone’s throw away at Turnberry Castle in 1274.

Eric, now running dad Donald’s business empire with brother Don Jr, said: “The greatest single thing about Turnberry is its history.

“You can buy a property and do any amount of things to it – but history is something you cannot put a price on and it’s everywhere you look here.

“Turnberry is iconic with very good reason and we look forward to making it that little bit more special.”

Work on a renewed spa facility is also set to take place as the resort’s £ 250million renovation shows no sign of slowing.

Eric added: “Once you stop making improvements, no matter what it is in life, the decline begins.

“So we will always find things here to work on and make better.”
