Roofer Craig’s dog hell on street

- Sarah Hilley

A huge dog reared up on its hind legs before sinking its teeth into a good samaritan.

The Japanese Akita type beast placed its paws on Craig Harvey’s shoulders and tore his arms and side last week.

Roofer Craig, 23, had been driving along Craigie Road in Ayr when he spotted the hound running on the road.

He had to brake hard to avoid hitting the animal, which ran in front of him at about 4pm on Wednesday.

Concerned Craig jumped out to help find the owner but was suddenly attacked.

Speaking on his behalf, dad Henry, 55, said: “The Akita jumped on him unprovoked. The dog put its paws on his shoulders and bit him on both arms and his side. The were severe deep bites.

“Residents could hear his screams. Craig would never manhandle a dog. He has been around dogs all his life.”

A next door neighbour took shaken Craig in and gave him refuge until the ambulance came.

Meanwhile police armed with shields stormed to the scene and gave chase to the Akita.

They animal calmed down after they cornered it in the park. Officers managed to move the animal into a van and it was taken to Ayr Police Station.

It is understood the dog is now being kept at kennels in East Ayrshire.

Grandfather Henry who runs Henry Harvey Roofing Specialists said his son is still off work at the family business.

He said: “He is doing allright but is a bit traumatised with the whole thing.”

A 27- year- old man has been reported to the procurator fiscal and is due to appear at court at a later date.
