Vandals dig up church ashes

Holy Trinity target of drunken louts

- Stuart Wilson

Drunken louts tore through ashes in a church garden during the dead of night.

The vandals hit Ayr’s Holy Trinity Church, destroying a lovingly- created memorial garden.

Church- goers arrived on Sunday to discover fences and flowers strewn across the turf.

It is not the first time the building, which was built in the late 19th century, has been targeted.

Property convener, Catriona Thom, revealed: “It is becoming a real problem for us.

“The memorial garden is a very important part of the church but has sadly become a target in recent years.

“People have their ashes buried there and it is extremely upsetting for families who might be affected by these actions.”

Catriona added: “The garden has been used to dump everything from Buckie bottles to people emptying their bowels.

“It’s difficult to keep protecting the church when people these days are determined to show no respect.”

Church chiefs believe the damage was done after 2am on Sunday morning.

Street pastors, who use the church as their base to patrol Ayr town centre, had reported no damage when they were locking up.

Catriona said: “Police have been informed and CCTV is now being examined, so hopefully the culprits are caught.

“The damage was cleaned up quickly but that is far from the point if we continually have to keep doing it.”

The church was designed by top architect, John Pearson, also designed Truro and Brisbane Cathedrals.
