Bomb threat jannie set for glory

- Michael Reynolds

School janitor Mat t McCreadie is set to receive a standing ovation after his vigilance snuffed out what he thought was a bomb threat.

The maintenance man at Greenmill Primary in Cumnock phoned police after he opened up on Monday morning, fearing a suspect package was in the grounds.

But the “bomb” turned out to be a box with a thermometer sticking out of it, inside a rucksack, which pupils were using as a weather gauge for a project.

Now pupils will thank the Matt the jannie for looking out for them, despite it turning out to be a false alarm.

A source said: “You can never be too careful when it comes to the safety of children. The janitor did the right thing by phoning it in.”

Alarmed parents received a text message at around 8.30am on Monday advising them the school was closed to both pupils and staff.

But the school opened again at around 9am after police officers investigated the suspect package and gave the all- clear.

A police spokesman said: “Police were called to a report of what appeared to be a suspicious item. However, it was found to be a false alarm and staff and pupils returned to school a short time later.”
