Care worker’s rapped over abusive outburst

Glebe House shock

- Michael Reynolds

A care worker who flew into a rage and left an elderly person in distress has been hit with an official warning.

Hayley Roy, a support worker at Glebe House Care Home in Dalmellington, accepted that her fitness to practise was impaired after her outburst in October 2015.

A Scottish Social Service Council hearing heard how she said to an elderly resident “I can’t get this f*** ing belt through the loops” before pulling out a wardrobe drawer and throwing it on the floor.

She also refused to make the vulnerable person a cup of tea, and shouted at them to “sit down.”

The panel met last week and found that Roy failed to treat the resident with “dignity and respect” while also failing to protect them from harm.

A report said: “The behaviour constituted inappropriate language and neglect of a resident.

“It is behaviour which appears to have caused distress to ( the resident) or at the very least, placed them at the risk of harm.”

“There is no indication that your behaviour was a reaction to a difficult situation.

“Your behaviour appears to have been unprompted which raises a concern over how you would react in a genuinely difficult situation.”

Roy will have a warning placed on her registration for 18 months, and will also be forced to undergo further training.

She will be required to show how she can communicate with respect, and recognise the “power and authority you may hold as a social service worker”.

The report said: “It would damage the reputation of the profession, and the SSSC in the eyes of the public as an effective regulator, if the behaviour was not marked with a finding of current impairment to your fitness to practise.”

Roy will also be banned from providing unsupervised care until the training has been carried out.
