Flamenco sensation set for summer sizzler

- Michael Reynolds

One of Ayrshire’s most famous stages is set to sizzle this summer as a top Spanish guitarist heads for the coast.

Eduardo Niebla will perform at The Gaiety in Ayr on June 29 as part of a UK- wide tour throughout June, July and August.

Famed for his “exhilarating mix of flamenco jazz fusion”, Niebla has collaborated with musicians from around the globe thanks to his exquisite guitar playing.

Flamenco is often heralded as one of the most difficult guitar styles to learn thanks to the intricate skill it demands of players. And Niebla has taken the style to world famous festivals such as Glastonbury and Celtic Connections, played at the Olympic Games and recorded 23 albums of original compositions.

On the new tour, Niebla will preview music from his highlyanticipated new album - being recorded ahead of his live dates at his North Yorkshire studios - as well as performing favourites from his back catalogue, spanning an impressive four decades.

His worldwide fame is a far cry from his early childhood in Tangiers, Morocco and Girona, Spain, where he grew up the seventh of 11 children.

From his early years, he has always pushed himself musically, learning flamenco on the streets before exploring jazz and symphonic rock in his teenage years with cult band Atila.

He moved to London in the late 70s where he performed with Mother Gong at Glastonbury, and worked with top producer Tom Newman.

Since then he has collaborated with musicians around the world including George Michael, Craig David, sitar maestro Nishat Khan, sax player Lol Coxhill, Palestinian oud player Adel Salameh and trance phenomenon Juno Reactor.

More recently he has worked with the dante and Pavao String Quartets and small choirs on new works with a distinctly classical vibe.

Eduardo Niebla, with guitarist Daniel Martinez Lopez, comes to Ayr’s Gaiety Theatre on Thursday, June 29.

Tickets cost £ 16.50 or £ 15.50 concessions and are available from The Gaiety box office on 01292 288235 or www. ayrgaiety. co. uk.
