Ayrshire Post

Lot of swinging is going on...

Will it hit rough or in the hole?

-

questioning is where these “millions of pounds for the Ayrshire economy” are supposed to be coming from?

Brian Connolly is lots of things – but daft isn’t one of them.

He’s no doubt already predicted all the controversial issues that I can see coming his way.

The Old Racecourse Dog Walkers Association has probably got a thousand pooper scoopers signed up to a “rights of way” petition already!

And the amateur footballers who may lose some pitches won’t be too happy either.

There will be the old school of regular golfers who can rightly argue their season tickets over decades have maintained Seafield – so why should they lose a prime stretch of it?

And there are others – myself included – who might argue that the golf at Belleisle is fine,

thank you very much. It’s the REST of the damned place that needs some money spent!

Council enterprise chief Jill Cronin warbles “This is an exciting opportunity to improve our already excellent facilities at Belleisle Park”. What planet is she on? The hotel is a shambolic embarrassment, swathes of trees have been laid waste and in general, the place is a mess.

It took a private army of fundraisers and volunteers to resurrect the now excellent Conservatory.

South Ayrshire Council – having gradually strangled Belleisle – needed two costly attempts just to throw up a golfer’s gang hut . . . and suddenly the facilities are “excellent”.

But hey – the greatest round of golf in history began with a single swing.

And if Golf Scotland and the Ayrshire Golfing Trust can overcome the bunkers, hazards and “out of bounds” issues that surely lie ahead – I wish them well.

This column regularly calls for changes and improvements to our local community. This is a big, big change. But if Brian and his team can convince the local community it’s going to be a big improvement – let’s get on with it.
