Newbie Owen in West gold show

- Mike Wilson

A group of Ayr divers made waves at the West District Diving Championships at the Citadel.

The event, run by Ayr Diving Club in partnership with South Ayrshire Council, attracted divers aged from eight to 17.

They competed for the fabulous West District trophies, some of which date back to the 1920s and bear some well known names in the diving world.

In the senior events, it was gold for Owen McLaughlin in the men’s 1- metre springboard event, an impressive feat for a diver who only took up the sport around a year ago.

In the 3- metre springboard event, gold was taken by Logan Reilly who, at only 11, came out on top against a field of much older divers.

In the ladies events, Erin Findlay took gold in both the 1- metre and 3- metre events, diving with great consistency.

In the junior events, gold was taken by Miya Morrison in the Ladies 1- metre springboard event. At only eight, Miya has achieved success at Scottish National and UK diving events.

In the junior men’s events, Rory Prentice took gold in both the 1- metre and 3- metre events with some impressive diving from the 10- year- old.

The Championships also featured a novice category, for less experienced divers and newer members of the Diving Club. In the girls’ 11 and under age group, gold was taken by Amy Milne in both the 1- metre and 3- metre springboard events. Honours in the 12 and over age group went to Millie Mullen on the 1- metre and Paige Cosker on the 3- metre springboard.

For the 11 and under boys, it was gold for Rory Duncan on both boards, with Andrew Milne taking honours for the older divers in both disciplines.
