A man appeared in court this week after a pensioner was killed in a road smash.

Slavi Todorov, 33, of Craigiehall, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He made no plea and was released on bail.

Neill Mackie, 76, died after his Ford Mondeo car collided with a Range Rover on the A70 road between Ayr and Coylton on Sunday morning.

He was rushed to Ayr Hospital with serious injuries following the accident but died shortly after.

The driver of the Range Rover also spent time in hospital after being injured.

Firefighters attended the scene and the road was closed for hours.

Sergeant Cat Gibbons said: “Our inquiries into this road crash are continuing and I understand there was a member of the public who administered medical assistance to the man who was injured.

“I would like to trace that person as they may be able to help with our inquiries.

“I also understand that there were numerous members of the public who were present too – again they may have important information which might be able to help us. “Similarly, I would like to hear from anyone who was present and who might have dash cam footage.” The main road between Ayr and Coylton was closed at the Holmston Roundabout and traffic diverted for a number of hours following the accident, which occurred around 2am. Stagecoach bus services were unable to serve Coylton as police cleared the road, before traffic was allowed through mid- morning.

Tributes were paid to Mr Mackie when he was named by police on Tuesday morning.

People took to social media to express their sorrow at his loss.

Sarah Dunlop said: “So sad. Neill was such a gentleman, always stories to tell. Will miss him at work.”

Kirsty Mitchell said: “He was such a nice man, we used to go buy our hay off him at his farm a few years ago and he worked taxis with my dad. R. I. P. Neill.”
