Ticket warning for derby clash

Police tell troublemakers to stay away

- Stuart Wilson

Police have pledged to clamp down on fans who have bought tickets for the wrong end at Friday night’s Ayrshire derby.

A huge security operation is being mounted amid concerns that supporters of both Ayr and Kilmarnock could clash on the terraces.

There are fears that Killie fans – who sold out their 3100 allocation – could have snapped up briefs for the home end.

A crowd of more than 6000 is expected for the first Somerset Park derby in eight years.

P o l i c e m a t c h comma n d e r J o h n Cairns this week warned troublemakers to “stay away” as officers prepare to snuff out bother.

He said: “We have been made aware that a number of Kilmarnock fans may have bought tickets for the Ayr end.

“But our message is very clear – if you do not have a ticket for the correct area of the ground then do not travel.

“Our officers will be there to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all and a robust plan is in place to deal with any disorder should it arise.”

With 48 hours to ago, more than 2500 tickets had been sold for the home end.

Chief Inspector Cairns, who has been policing in Ayrshire since 2003, added: “This is an occasion for the area to enjoy, with both clubs enjoying a long history and a great rivalry.

“The game is being broadcast on live television and should be a fantastic night for both sets of fans.

“As ever, our advice is to plan your journey well in advance as the town will be far busier both in the build up to and after the match.

“We wi l l have a significant presence both in and around the ground, and fans can also expect to see mobile and foot patrols in town.”
