Bowls and golf business bonanza

Hotels and B& Bs are sold out as legions of bowlers and lady golfers descend on ayrshire.

Bowls scotland Finals at northfield in ayr and the Ladies scottish open at Dundonald mean south ayrshire is quids in. and space is at such a premium that a bowls team from arbroath managed to get the last four beds – in tarbolton.

Ayrshire hopes went tumbling as the Bowls Scotland finals turned from sunshine to rain at Northfield.

Jean Sykes ( Cumnock), Andrew Weir ( Prestwick) and Billy Anderson ( Coylton) were among first day exits on Monday.

Cumnock’s senior fours of Eddie Duncan, Willie White, Willie McLatchie and Willie McKenzie lost 17- 11 to Mount Vernon.

Coylton’s Isobel McCulloch, Margare t Brown, Susan Cobbledick and Marlene Dunlop went out 15- 9 to Newmains.

Prestwick dad and daughter Jamie and Rebecca Houston flew the flag in the mixed pairs with a 33- 9 win over Galston YM. But they fell 20- 9 to Brock on Tuesday.

Rebecca opened her junior singles bid with a 21- 19 win over Laura Cunningham ( Victoria).

The singles action gets underway on Thursday with Dawn Anderson ( Newton Park) against Kathy Houston ( Caledonia) at 11am and Derek Ferguson ( Glaisnock Valley) against Robert Moles ( Titwood) at 3pm.

Finals are at Northfield on Saturday.
