Terrorist fear at police HQ

Man accused of drunk and dangerous driving

- Michael Reynolds

Fears of a terror attack at Ayr police station erupted after a van was deliberately driven at the main entrance.

The vehicle raced down John Street and slammed straight through the front door.

Somehow the driver allegedly managed to put the Vauxhall Combo into reverse and get it out of the King Street building.

Alexander McDonald, 38, of Galston, appeared in private at Ayr Sheriff Court on Monday charged with dangerous driving and drink- driving.

He made no plea, and was remanded in custody for further examination to appear again at the court within eight days.

A white Vauxhall van crashed through the front of the police station at around 1am on Sunday.

After smashing into the glass doors, the driver allegedly made off towards the A77 along Whitletts Road.

He was chased by police before the van was “forcibly stopped” near to Rabbit Wood in Tarbolton, east of the junction with the A719.

An eyewitness told the Post: “I drove by[ the police station] just after the crash and it looked like a scene from a terrorist incident.

“There were police running everywhere and it was total panic.

“The vehicle had obviously just left the scene but it was clear something had ploughed straight into the station.”

An ambulance attended the scene, but the driver of the van was not injured. No police officers were injured as a result of the incident, but the front of Ayr police station was left extensively damaged. It was closed for the majority of Sunday, while safety work was carried out on the property before it re- opened to the public on Monday.
