Dunes must be controlled

-

The topic of sand dunes forming on Ayr beach near the old coastguard station and battery was covered recently in the Ayrshire Post.

I visited Ayr in June and was shocked by the sight of sand dunes near the old coastguard station.

As children my friends and I spent much of the summer holidays on the beach, which was cleaned by a tractor every morning. The corner near the pier was our favourite as it was sheltered and had some rocks to add interest to the beach.

I read a response in your paper by someone saying that sand dunes are a natural occurence. That is exactly why the beach has to be cleared every morning.

If you want sand dunes, go to the Greenan end. The town beach is a tourist attraction because it doesn’t have sand dunes.

The grass is very hard on the skin if it gets caught between the toes and windblown rubbish gets caught in the grass.

If you stop to think about it the higher ground that makes up Montgomerie Terrace is the result of a natural sand dune forming against the ancient wall of Cromwell’s citadel.

If the beach isn’t cleared another mound will form against the battery and then against the pier, pushing the tide- line out towards the end of the pier. Not that it will matter by that time because there won’t be any tourists on the untidy, natural beach at Ayr.
