Don’t build an eyesore on this shore

Residents’ opposition to Prestwick retirement flats

- Stuart Wilson

A builder has been accused of “ignoring” public outrage in its bid to erect a new retirement complex.

McCarthy & Stone plans to build 69 beach flats on prime real estate at Prestwick shore.

But the “assisted living development” could be on the rocks after a row broke out over its design.

Community leaders are pledging to fight the proposed overhaul on the promenade.

The base, set to care for people over 70, will replace the former children’s cancer home ditched by CLIC Sargent.

Jim Ronney, chair of Prestwick North Community Council, said: “Nobody is against the idea of these facilities.

“But since day one, the design has been a problem and we’ve made that very clear to McCarthy & Stone.

“We do not feel the proposals are in keeping with the area and we need to see changes to the structure.”

The flat roof concept of the newlook structure is among the major concerns of residents.

Bosses have also switched from an ‘ L’ shaped design to a ‘ T’ layout following complaints from Prestwick Golf Club.

And reinforced windows will be installed to allay fears over stray balls damaging the new property.

Fellow community council member, Mike Tomlinson, said: “The word iconic is overused but this piece of land is probably among the best in the west of Scotland.

“You have the views to Arran on one side and the birthplace of Open Golf on the other.

“The developer has a duty, therefore, to come up with something far more inspiring than what we’ve got.

“We just feel they’re ignoring our concerns and producing an overdeveloped site.”

Russ Stewart, development director of McCarthy & Stone in Scotland, claimed about the proposed development: “We’ve addressed comments raised at the consultation and have made changes to the proposal as a direct result of feedback.

“The proposed development provides a fantastic opportunity for a high quality development, in a highly sustainable location, which will cater for the changing needs of Ayrshire’s elderly population and provide a substantial investment into the local economy.

“It is pleasing that the proposed Extra Care facility will maintain the historical care use established on site and provide wider social and health benefits to residents and the community.”
