Stepping out to help raise cash for clock tower

-

A minister is stepping up to the task of covering the West Highland Way.

Rev David Prentice- Hyers of Troon Old Parish Church will leg it over the 96 mile route this week.

His itinerary will include 20 mile stints daily with the lowest distance being nine miles.

The pilgrimage into the heartland of some of the nation’s most stunning scenery aims raise money to restore the church’s clock tower.

The dad- of- two, who hails from the US originally, said: “We love the people, the geography and our lives in Scotland. I wanted to have a chance to slow down and let my feet feel the land rather than just pass by in the car. I am interested in pilgrimage and thought this would be a great way to raise money for the church and see the highlands.”

Rev Prentice- Hyers is a huge fan of Scottish American naturalist John Muir who campaigned for the preservation of wilderness.

He said: “John Muir said everyone needs beauty as well as bread. Walking in the countryside feeds the soul. There is nowhere else in earth like the highlands.”

The fundraising walk is part of a campaign to maintain the old house of prayer in Ayr Street in the seaside town.

Rev Prentice- Hyers said: “Our buildings are a beautiful part of the ministry of Troon Old Parish Church. For almost 200 years they have not only served the needs of the congregation, but also the needs of the wider community. They are living buildings, busy each day meeting the needs of Troon. They house fitness groups, charity coffee mornings, youth organisations, worship services, a foodbank branch and many other activities. As our usage of the halls continue to change and grow we must ensure that they are in good working order. “Our hall is the oldest building on site and incorporates the clock tower. The tower is in urgent need of repair and we would also like to bring the clock back into full operation. This work will help ensure the usability of the building now and for future generations.”
