Leonard relishes Premier challenge for Girvan

Peter Leonard wants Girvan’s first ever game in the Premier League at home to Arthurlie on Saturday to be a special occasion.

Leonard has led the Hamilton Parkers into the top flight for the first time after back to back title triumphs. Now he says the whole club is up for the challenge.

He said: “Having made such a big effort to get there we want to be able to compete at that level. It’s going to be difficult but we want to make ourselves hard to beat.

“The confidence is growing and Michael Reilly and Robert Patterson have both started well with five goals.”

Girvan have re- signed old boys Stevie O’Donnell, Darren Mitchell and Danny Cunningham while full- back Andy Hunter is on loan from Glenafton.

Girvan topped their Ardagh Cup section with four straight wins and 15 goals to book a home quarter- final.

Paul Cameron ( 2), Patterson, Jack McDowall and Stephen Auld were on the mark in a 5- 0 win over Craigmark.

In midweek, they came from behind to beat Whitletts 3- 2 with goals from Reilly ( 2) and Patterson. Craig Harvey hit a double for Vics.

open their Premier campaign away to Rob Roy – that’s after an Ardagh Cup tie at home to Muirkirk on Wednesday.

Returning striker Sean McIlroy, now back from Australia, scored a 22 minute hat- trick in a 4- 0 win over Kello. Mark Shankland added a fourth.

In midweek, they beat Lugar 5- 0 with goals from Jamie Glasgow ( 2), Graham Wilson, Gordon Pope and Klark Thompson.

head to Kilwinning on Saturday after a Wednesday visit to Lugar in the Ardagh Cup.

They bounced back from a 2- 0 defeat at home to Glenafton – David Gray and Chris Dallas got the goals – to crush Muirkirk 7- 0.

Scott Anson grabbed a hat- trick, Sean Fitzharris hit two while Adam Forsyth and Sean McKenzie also scored.

open their First Division season at home to Irvine Meadow but their Ardagh Cup place is still in the balance – they have to beat Whitletts at Portland Park on Wednesday and wait for the result between Annbank and Craigmark.

Troon beat Annbank 3- 1 with goals from Graeme Barbour, Lee McCrea and Mark Curragh after Maclean Simpson fired Bankies ahead.

In midweek, Troon had Scott Chatham sent off in a 2- 1 defeat at Craigmark who scored through Scott Dempster and Declan Dunlop. Curragh netted for Troon.

head to Muirkirk in the Ayrshire League hoping for big things from former Leeds and Zimbabwe U23 striker Mbanje Munyaradzi.

The new boy scored in a 3- 2 win at Maybole with other goals coming from Harvey ( penalty) and Darren Baird. Chris Allan hit a double for ‘ Bole.
