Concert to celebrate 25 years of singing
Dreghorn Musical Society began its life with a small group of enthusiastic singers being encouraged by the Parish Church organist Andy Young.
That was in September 1992.
And next month the 93 members of the musical society will perform at their 25th anniversary concert in Kilmarnock’s Grand Hall in front of hundreds.
Among the singers will be four of the founding members of the society: Margaret Heron, Betty Vogwell, Rosemary Johnston and Anne Watts.
“We started with a few members with the wonderful Andy Young, who was the church organists at the time,” said Rosemary.
“It’s quite amazing to think that was 25 years ago.”
Margaret Vogwell explained it is more than singing you can expect when you join: “We have social evenings, quiz nights, I have made friends for life here at the society.”
But the women admit there is something they do need: men.
Margaret Heron explained: “We always need male members to sign up.
“We could do with some more tenors to join and it would be great to see some new singers.”
Musical director Stephen Cowan began as the society’s accompanist and since 2008 has been the musical director, leading the singers in their arrangements and performances throughout the year.
As well as small, intimate concerts they regularly sing at St Giles’ in Edinburgh, a venue they will perform at the week before their anniversary concert at the Grand Hall.
“It has been a privilege to work with this society. Everyone gives it 110 per cent every week,” said Stephen.
“We wanted to do something special for our 25th anniversary so we thought the Grand Hall was perfect for the occasion.
“We will be performing songs from all the eras, right back from 1992 through to the modern day.
“Then it will be time to get back to rehearsals for our Christmas show.”
Society chairwoman Debbie Cruickshank arrived in Ayrshire three years ago and upon hearing the society perform she decided she wanted to join them.
“I had just moved to the area from Perth,” said Debbie.
“I came along and heard them sing and knew I wanted to be part of that.
“Singing on your own, you feel a sense of being isolated but as part of the choir you lose that and you instantly feel part of a group.”
Dreghorn Musical Society’s 25th anniversary concert will be in the Grand Hall, Kilmarnock, on Wednesday, September 20.
