Top blues outfit set for special night on famous Ayr stage

- Michael Reynolds

One of the UK’s top blues groups are heading to Ayrshire later this year.

Paul Jones and the Blues Band will play at Ayr’s Gaiety Theatre on Friday, November 3 for what is sure to be a fantastic night of music.

Formed in 1979 by ex- Manfred Mann group members Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, the band originally intended just to play a few pub gigs.

But they soon recruited slide guitar ace and vocalist Dave Kelly and bass player Gary Fletcher.

The line- up was completed in 1982 when Rob Townsend replaced Hughie Flint on drums.

They achieved fame in the 1980s after Radio One presenter Simon Bates played their music to millions.

But it was their passion for the blues that brought the musicians together, in the hopes of playing just for fun and a little beer money.

But they soon found themselves with whole new careers on their hands, and have went on to release more than 20 albums.

Their most recent, Few Short Lines, was released to great reviews in 2011.

They are one of few bands to not only have performed for so long, but to consistently craft and record new music.

Paul and the band have become known around the world for their drive and determination, constantly reinventing themselves to find new audiences and thrill long- time fans.

In 1994, their Wireless album saw them venture into acoustic music for the first time, followed up by a similar release in 2000 with the Scratchin’ On My Screen record.

They introduced big band sounds in 1999 with the Brassed Up CD, before returning to their roots in 2002 for the Stepping Out release.

Throughout their career, the group have performed on some of the world’s most intimate clubs through to civic halls and theatres as well as taking to the stage in front of thousands at Glastonbury.

The variety of performance and material offered by the band has been described as unrivalled, while their passion and reverence for the music, their presentation and showmanship all promise to combine to deliver the definitive ‘ good night out’ available from any blues artist in Europe.

But the band say most credit has to go to their audience who keep coming back for more - and they say thousands of gigs and hundreds of thousands of fully paid gig attendees can’t be wrong.

Paul Jones and the Blues Band perform at Ayr’s Gaiety Theatre on Friday, November 3.
