Talented artist’s work on display

Margaret painted part of Berlin Wall

- Lochlin Highet

A woman who helped paint the Berlin Wall is having her art showcased in an exhibition.

Margaret Hunter was part of a group of artists who painted the wall in 2009 and her work is currently displayed at the Maclaurin Gallery, Rozelle Park, in Ayr.

Margaret trained at the Glasgow School of Art and also in Berlin where she was working in 1989 when, suddenly, after almost half a century, the infamous Berlin Wall fell.

This symbol of oppression and tyranny that had cut the city in half was being dismantled.

The group of artists who had lived and worked in East and West Germany volunteered to paint the 1,300km of the wall left standing, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its dismantling.

At first it was thought this piece of painted wall would itself be gone fairly quickly, but it became such a major tourist attraction that it still stands today.

This part of the wall, known as the East Side Gallery depicts the two Germanys lying side by side.

A huge painted copy of this mural entitled Re- Statement is now on show at The Maclaurin Gallery where Margaret’s work is on exhibition.

Margaret, of Irvine, is an artist who is celebrated across the continent, bringing a retrospective collection of her work back to the gallery where she first exhibited at the very start of her career.

Her exhibition continues until October 8 at the Maclaurin Gallery.
