Sky’s the limit as estate gets Active firm boost
An outdoor adventure firm is set to bring its bold brand of entertainment to East Ayrshire.
Active Outdoor Pursuits, a successful enterprise based in the Cairngorms, has just completed a six- week test run at Dalmellington’s Craigengillan Estate.
The company began life in Cumnock and is keen to establish a sister operation based out of Craigengillan.
Two of its 15 qualified instructors based themselves at the estate and led groups of families, individuals, youth groups, sea cadets and schools in a variety of activities during the pilot.
They included river canyoning in Ness Glen, gorge walking, abseiling across Dalcairnie Falls, kayaking, rock climbing and mountain biking.
Owners Roy and Sophia Gibson believe the location of Craigengillan could prove ideal for the expansion of their business.
They said: “We have thought for some time that Craigengillan had everything we were looking for.
“Quite apart from its spectacular river gorge in Ness Glen, safe kayaking, waterfalls and ideal climbing rocks, an added bonus is its inclusion within the Dark Sky Park and Unesco Biosphere.
“Another aspect which delighted us was the warm welcome given to us by the people of Dalmellington and Bellsbank.
“The test run has built momentum and we are now committed to stay.
“We are still taking bookings for Craigengillan this year, with instructors coming down specially from our Cairngorms base to meet demand.”
Craigengillan owner Mark Gibson hailed the decision of Active to commit to the Ayrshire site.
He said: “I am incredibly pleased that Active found their test run was a success and are here to stay.
“It is a vindication of all the hard work that has gone into restoring the landscape, creating access and protecting and enhancing wildlife habitats.
“It is also a recognition of the great natural assets we have.
“We expect that Active’s commitment will lead to the creation of high- quality new jobs.
“I have always believed in this place and its potential and I think this enterprise will sit well with the Craigengillan Stables, the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory and the holiday cottages, all of which have surpassed expectations. The support of everyone in the village has meant a lot.”
