That was just awful says boss as Ayr fall from grace

-

Ian McCall roasted Ayr for an awful display as the fallen leaders were taught a lesson.

And the angry boss admitted a bigger than average crowd were let down by a second best performance.

Somerset boss McCall claimed: “Arbroath deserved to win as they were better than us and looked hungrier.

“The first goal was a killer because it was never a free- kick but they looked dangerous all game with high balls into the box.

“They were first to second balls all day but their goal in the 47th minute changed it.

“It was very disappointing as we had a great crowd and atmosphere but we were absolutely awful.”

Chris Higgins fired Ayr ahead three minutes before the interval after David Hutton parried from Craig Moore.

But the Smokies dealt a hammer blow in stoppage time when Omar Kader forced the ball home.

The winner came on the hour when skipper Mark Whatley fired a 25 yard stunner into the top corner to leave Jordan Hart clawing fresh air.

B oss Dick Campbell, who saw Arbroath climb to third, revealed: “I’ve been accusing my team in the last five or six games of not putting enough work into the game but they have answered that in the right way.

“Any football supporter would recognise that we thoroughly deserved to win particularly against a team who have been going so well.

“It’s a magnificent result and a fantastic goal to win it. “
