JUNIORS ARE UP FOR A CUP RUN

Girvan bid for cash boost from run in Scottish

-

Peter Leonard says Girvan are gunning for a crack at the big guns when they kick off in the William Hill Scottish Cup on Saturday,

The Premier Division new boys are fancied to win away to St Cuthbert Wanderers and move one step closer to a tie against a top senior side.

Boss Leonard said: “Last year, we got to the next round and lost 2- 1 to Huntly so we would like to go further this time.

“Cup runs bring income to the club and we have a smaller budget than other Premier teams so extra cash might help us bring in a player.”

Girvan held on for their second successive point when they drew 0- 0 at Kilbirnie despite having Stevie O’Donnell and Scott Dinwoodie sent off.

Debut keeper Ally Semple, signed on a five week loan from Troon, played for 85 minutes on his debut with a broken finger.

GLENAFTON are hot favourites to march past Golspie Sutherland at home despite crashing to a shock 5- 0 defeat at Beith where Kyle McAusland was sent off.

Boss Craig McEwan said: “We don’t go from being treble winners to a bad team overnight.”

AUCHINLECK and CUMNOCK are idle because of the senior cup involvement of Girvan and Glens although Talbot will host Annbank in a friendly. Incredibly, Bankies haven’t kicked a ball after their opening two league games were washed out.

Talbot came from behind to beat Hurlford 4- 1 with goals in the last 12 minutes from Mark Shankland, Calvin Kemp, Graham Wilson ( penalty) and Sean McIlroy. Hurlford had Glen Mitchell sent off after 13 minutes but went ahead on the hour through Mark Roberts.

Cumnock bounced back from their defeat at Kilwinning to beat Pollok 1- 0 with a second- half goal from Adam Forsyth.

TROON head to First Division title favourites Largs after a thumping 7- 1 win at Maryhill where Mark Curragh scored a hat- trick.

Other goals came from Scott McLean ( 2), Ross Barbour and Dale Shirkie. The hosts had a man sent off before pulling back a last minute consolation.

WHITLETTS go to Saltcoats after a 2- 1 win over Ardeer. Craig Harvey and Louis Kerr put them ahead but Derek Kennedy ensured a nervous second- half when he pulled one back. Harvey had an injury time penalty saved.

MAYBOLE made it 11 goals from two games when they crushed Saltcoats 9- 0 with hat- tricks from Chris Allan and Ross Clark. Also on the mark were John Lowe, Sam Nimmo and Nicky Warren.

Now they head to Irvine Vics in a dress rehearsal for their Scottish Cup tie later this month.
