Halloween‘ s new festive tree

- Sarah Hilley

A“Halloween Tree” has been unleashed on Ayr High Street.

The spooky Christmas tree draped in ghoulish Halloween decorations has appeared in the shop window of chain Wilko. Instead of being topped by the traditional star, the artifical pine boasts a witches hat on the pinnacle.

Shiny baubles have been replaced by a hanging ghost, bat and skull with orange pumpkin tinsel wrapped around them.

Browsers said the shop window tree, which wasn’t for sale, appeared to merge the Christian December festival with Halloween.

Mum- of- three, Cherie Lawrie, 34, of Kirkoswald, said: “The Halloween merchandise is barely out and then the Christmas goods arrive. Christmas is arriving earlier every year. Putting up a Christmas tree with Halloween decorations would mean it would be up for too long. I don’t put up my tree until the middle of December.”

Elsewhere in the High Street, Mothercare has proudly displayed two traditionl Christmas trees in the window.

Clintons is packed with Christmas cards for sale. Wilko was packed with fun Halloween trinkets but had no Christmas decorations on the shelves yet. Meanwhile Dobbies in Ayr have festive decorations on display.

A shopper said: “I think Christmas and Halloween should be kept completely separate. It is quite a fun idea but we should stick to traditions.”

Journalism student Charlene Bennie, 22, of Girvan was among those to stop in her tracks to check out the strange Wilko tree.

A Wilko spokesman said:“Our Ayr store team members were excited to create wilko’s first ever ‘ Halloween Tree’, a recent decorating trend that’s current and prevalent on social media. We have a wide range of Halloween decorations this year in store and online at wilko. com, and our team wanted to showcase them to shoppers in a creative way.”

The Christmas tree concept is thought to have originated from Germany.
