Band launch EP on big stage

Pair excited to play new material at Glasgow gig

- Michael Reynolds

An Ayrshire electro duo are set to release their first EP with a top show in Glasgow.

Neon Prism – musicians Robbie Muir and Aimee Penman – have whittled down the tracks from more than a dozen they have put together in the studio.

Formerly known as PRIXMS, the pair struck up an instant rapport and have already gained an impressive online following ahead of the release of the Refractions EP on Friday.

Now they’ll take to the stage at Stereo in the city centre, alongside Low Island, to launch their first recordings.

And the Glasgow date will also be the duo’s first live performance, after honing their craft in the studio. Robbie said: “It’s got that kind of 80s ring to it. Although the music isn’t particularly 80s we like to keep an element of that in it.

“The age group we are going for with this kind of music is nostalgic. I’m a big fan of 80s art, I like to do art inspired by things like Blade Runner and Knight Rider.”

He added: “I’ve been writing music since I was 11, it’s always been dance and electric music. For the past three years I’ve wanted to do something different.

“I’ve been inspired by acts like Massive Attack and Leftfield. I was looking around for someone I could team up with. I spoke to a friend called Connor who we both know and he told me to speak to Aimee.

“We recorded tracks and it worked out great and decided that we were going to release an EP.” Vocalist Aimee is classically trained and spent time in London and Edinburgh before returning to Troon and striking up her partnership with Robbie.

She said: “I didn’t expect to be doing something as interesting when I moved back to Ayrshire.

“It’s great to be able to use all my experiences. We’re looking forward to playing it live. The gig with Low Island coincides with the EP launch, and we look forward to playing alongside them.”

The pair, – who already have an impressive international following in Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Italy – already have more tracks ready and hope to release another EP hot on the heels of their debut.

Neon Prism perform at Stereo on Renfield Lane, Glasgow on Friday ( October 13). For tickets, message Neon Prism on Facebook.
