Calvin for pro debut
Another Doon Valley Boxing Club starlet is taking up the pro game.
Calvin McCord, 20, is stepping up after an excellent amateur career in which he won three Scottish titles and five British silver medals over a nine- year spell.
Calvin, who has signed up with Team MTK, said: “I think this is the perfect time to make the switch. I’ve got the style for the pro game and this is a big step.
“MTK are who I wanted to sign with as soon as I decided to turn professional and I’m delighted to be part of the team.”
McCord will make his debut on October 28 at the Paisley Lagoon Centre.
He said: “I can’t wait for it. I’m looking forward to getting the first fight under my belt and getting the nerves out the way.
“I’ll be trained by Sam Mullen at Doon Valley where I have been since I was seven. It’s a brilliant gym and I’ve boxed there from the very start, it’s like a big family in the gym.”
Campaigning in the Lightweight division, McCord is targeting titles and is setting his sights high under the MTK banner.
Calvin, a former Belmont Academy pupil, said: “I want to see how far I can get and what my real potential is. I believe I’ll definitely be challenging for British and European titles and then we’ll see where it goes after that.”
