Selfish drivers are crossing the line

Residents blast motorists parking on double yellow

- Lochlin Highet

Fed- up residents have slammed selfish motorists who are causing havoc by parking on double yellow lines in Girvan.

Neighbours in Deacons Place are up in arms at drivers who dump their cars so they can get to work.

Double parking is also an issue, where cars park parallel - causing trouble for other cars getting through.

This is a real problem on Roxburgh Road, Torcy Way and Elder Avenue.

Now the residents are calling on the police to tackle the issue.

A concerned resident said: “It is a real worry for the whole town.

“I spoke to a taxi driver and they said ‘ I’m a taxi driver, I will do what I want to do’.

“Also, I was on a bus one time and the double parking was so bad that the driver had to get out of the bus.”

But a police spokeswoman said: “Double yellow lines are no longer a criminal matter.

“Residents should be relying on parking attendants who will give them ticket fines.

“People used to drive off when they saw us.

“But now they don’t care as there’s nothing we can do.

“However, concerned people should still contact the police if they see a car parked on double yellow lines.

“If we are there and see a driver we will speak to them and ask them to move on.”

Town councillor Alec Clark said: “I understand that it’s no longer a criminal offence.

“But I think there should be some sort of police presence.

I don’t mean every day, I just think there should be some sort of sporadic service during the school term.

“I know that people are busy, but children’s lives come first at the end of the day.

“If that means being a couple of minutes late to potentially save someone’s life - then so be it.”
