- Sarah Hilley

A school run driver turned up with an axe during a road rage incident at pick up.

Hugh Kerr had the weapon tucked into his jacket during the spat outside Glenburn Primary in Prestwick.

The 53- year- old was giving his brother a lift to pick up a child when an argument erupted with another motorist.

Kerr parked on a driveway opposite the school on Sherwood Road, Ayr Sheriff Court heard last week.

Depute fiscal Andrew Lazarin said a row broke out between Kerr and a Mr Alexander over the driveway being blocked at 3pm.

Mr Alexander spotted the yellow handle of the axe sticking out of Kerr’s jacket.

He threw Kerr to the ground and the axe fell out of the coat landing on the ground nearby.

Mr Lazarin said: “A member of staff from the school came to investigate what was going on and saw Mr Alexander restraining the accused on the ground.” The fiscal said Mr Alexander claimed Kerr had attacked him with an axe.

Ker r claimed Mr Alexander had assaulted him previously, broke free and drove off.

Lawyer Peter Lockhart said an incident had taken place in the past between his client and Mr Alexander.

Mr Lockhart said: “He took the axe with him and had it in his car. There was an altercation. Matters flowed from there.”

Earlier Mr Lockhart requested the case be deferred for a psychiatric report.

But Sheriff Montgomery said: “He took an axe to the school. What does he not understand?”

Kerr, of Tig Road, Ayr admitted having the axe in a public place on November 3, 2016.

Sheriff Montgomery sentenced Kerr to 12 months of supervision stipulating that he attend for mental health assessment and medical treatment as directed.
