Pet base can be crem de la crem Owners can say goodbye to furry friends

- Stuart Wilson

Plans to open South Ayrshire’s first pet crematorium have been given the go- ahead.

Entrepreneur Forbes Robertson will head up the scheme in Ayr’s West Sanqhuar Road.

Council officials have rubber stamped proposals for the former MOT station under Robertson’s ownership.

The application received more than 50 letters of support to council planning HQ and was passed under delegated powers.

The facility could open by spring subject to the granting of building warrants, with up to six jobs created.

Forbes, 62, said: “As someone who has gone through the pain of losing a pet, I know how hard it can be.

“They become like one of the family and it is very important to recognise their passing in the proper way.

“This building has done nothing for four or five years – now I can make it useful and provide people with a sensitive and tasteful service.”

An ex- minister has been lined up to perform services for owners using the crematorium, which will operate during business hours between Monday- Friday.

Nursing home boss, Forbes, said cremations on dogs, cats and other small animals will be carried out in an incinerator at the property. He added: “Pet cremation is now growing in popularity here, probably off the back of how big it is in America.

“We could see people travelling from all over the south- west of Scotland to use our facility – and if we can help them then all the better.”
