Horror defeat sounds alarms

Abysmal Ayr suffer humiliation

-

by the Watsonian pack ominiously humping Ayr rapidly backwards until hooker Ross Graham grounded the ball for full back Andrew Chalmers to collect the first of his 18 point haul from the game.

With Ayr showing little urgency, Chalmers extended the lead with a penalty but Ayr finally struck back, Frazier Climo picking an elusive line to go in at the posts for Scott Lyle to convert.

The relief around the home support was tangible when skipper Pete McCallum pulled off an outrageous steal at the back of a Watsonian ruck and belted all of 35 yards to score.

Normal Millbrae service had been restored was the assumption but that 12- 10 lead evaporated before the break as Ayr failed to build on that lead, committing one handling error after another and showing a significant reluctance to make first up tackles tell.

They paid the price when Rory Hutton displayed the skills which many felt a few seasons ago would take him to the top as he ghosted through the Ayr defence for a fine score and when, on the half time whistle, Chalmers added a penalty to that conversion, the 20- 12 lead in no way flattered the visitors.

Ayr would surely come out fighting to turn things round was the expectation of the fans but instead it was Watsonian who got a grip on the game in the first five minutes of the half which they were not to relinquish to the end.

Burly flanker Rory Drummond took advantage of some woeful tackling to grab his first try as the capital side dominated play then on the sixtieth minute, he rounded off a splendid move to touch down for the bonus clinching score.

At this point, it would have been embarrassing to tally the possession and territory stats since Ayr rarely had the ball and when they did get possession, their attempts at creating any momentum were inept in the face of the bruising Watsonian defence and the abrasive relish they brought to the breakdown.

Euan Dods dominated the line out, the scrums were going in the visitors favour and nothing Ayr did was going right and it came as no surprise when two minutes after Drummond’s second try, wing Ally Davidson scampered in unopposed for try number five.

The wing completed Ayr’s misery in the final minutes with his second try, Chalmers converted as he had done with all six tries and in the end, it was a dishevelled Ayr in total disarray who were left to contemplate as humiliating an afternoon as they have experienced at Millbrae for a long time.
