Boroughmuir visit is now a crunch
You don’t become a bad side after one result and Ayr’s performance against Watsonian was as rare as a sensible Trump tweet but there were worrying aspects which have to be addressed before the arrival of Boroughmuir at Millbrae on Saturday ( 3pm).
Ha v i n g l o s t t h e opportunity of consolidating their position in the BT Premiership with two home games before the break in November, the visit of Boroughmuir now assumes a much greater significance.
It was at Meggetland after all that Frazier Climo produced a last minute get out of jail card with a drop goal and ‘ Muir will be desperate to get back on track after losing two games on the trot.
There has been a suspicion growing over the past few weeks that Watsonian coach Stevie Lawrie was getting to grips with his new charges and the evidence was there as the power game based on their pack was dominant.
What was alarming though was Ayr’s apparent inability to disrupt the opposition’s momentum, something summed up by skipper Pete McCallum.
He said: “We never took control at any time and when we couldn’t get the ball in the second half, we had no opportunity to build any momentum. We have to re- group before we take on Boroughmuir.”
Indeed they will since the top of the BT Premiership, with the exception of runaway leaders Melrose, could not be tighter. Currie have gone second with 29 points, Stirling, Ayr and Hawks are third, fourth and fifth on 28 and separated only by differential while Heriots lurk in sixth on 26.
Game nine in the league campaign is now critical for all five clubs.
