Our mean defence is so crucial, says Chris

Chris Higgins reckons Ayr’s defenders are the unsung heroes of the club’s surge to joint top of League One.

While the strikers are scoring for fun – 52 goals in all games – four clean sheets in the last five matches have proved equally as crucial.

Saturday’s 2- 0 win over Stranraer pulled Ayr level on points with Raith but with a game more played.

Higgins, 32, said: “Raith got a difficult 1- 1 draw at Forfar, who were always going to be desperate for a reaction after we beat them 5- 0. We have to focus on ourselves and not think about Raith.

“There is still a long way to go but the next games are big for us. Arbroath is tough but we can go there with confidence and then we meet Raith at Somerset.

“As the manager said, it’s the first time since the start of the season we’ve had a full squad. Our bench is so strong and look at the players who never got on.

“Four clean sheets in the last five games is great and there’s plenty of goals in the team.

“We’re in a good place right now.”
