Closure of A77 as farm fire ignites

- Stephen Houston

A ferocious fire ripped through a farm workshop, completely sealing off the A77 for more than four hours and injuring a man. The drama happened on Tuesday afternoon at Burnside, between Dipple and Girvan. There are multiple buildings at the working farm steading and giant sheds at the rear. Twenty firefighters aboard four engines raced to the scene - under three miles from Girvan - around 1.40pm. Residents of nearby cottages and workers from a number of businesses on the site were evacuated as fears arose there were “chemicals and other things” in the blazing shed. The trunk road did not reopen until 6pm and had been closed chiefly for the safety of fire- fighters. The fire broke out in a single storey workshop.

Ayr fire chief Greig Fleming said: “It was already well developed and an adult male casualty was located in the building suffering burns to his arms, he was taken to Ayr Hospital by ambulance.

“We used one main jet on surrounding buildings to prevent spread. This type of commercial building was a challenge and investigations are continuing at this time.”
