Loo must be joking!

-

Council chiefs have been accused of “treating Prestwick with contempt” – after slapping a fee on public loos.

Toilets at the town’s beach will become pay as you go later this month with a charge of 30p.

A £ 20,000 investment at Links Road will include new paintwork, a review of all fittings and installation of a coin operated paddle gate.

A coin box will also be fitted to the disabled WC at the side of the block.

But town councillor, Hugh Hunter said: “It seems a nonsense to me.

“I think it’s short- sighted in the extreme and once again it’s about treating Prestwick with utter contempt.”

Councillor Peter Henderson, resources spokesman, claimed: “We’re committed to maintaining services and these improvements in Prestwick make a real difference to the block on Links Road.

“With work now well advanced on cleaning the nearby beach, the community and visitors coming to the area will soon be able to benefit from better services and a more pleasant environment.

“To help manage the public convenience we’ve introduced a small service charge which will help maintain current standards in the months ahead.”

The toilets, which are closed for upgrade work, will re- open on Friday, November 24.
