Life on the high seas

A master mariner thrilled with his tales of sailing the seven seas and Scotland’s oil boom.

Bob Gibson was a guest speaker at Ayr Rotary Club, telling them of his 15 years in the Merchant Navy before he transferred to the North Sea at the height of the oil boom.

He told them of his experiences on offshore rigs which produce a mixture of oil, gas and water – as well as adventures including being held at knifepoint by pirates in the South China Sea.

Brian Strathern thanked Bob for his talk about a career in which there was, seemingly, never a dull moment.
