Parking strife is just a fine mess for our towns

£ 100,000 in tickets – but little reward

- Stuart Wilson

The revelation that parking tickets will earn South Ayrshire Council more than £ 100,000 this year has not gone down well with Post readers.

Fines worth thousands are mounting up in Ayr town centre as shoppers bid to beat the system in search of a sneaky visit.

But is enough being done by those in power to reinvest the lucrative income?

And should our town centres, in the face of such fierce ‘ shop- osition’ from the likes of Silverburn, be opened up to free parking?

We hit the streets this week to find out what readers thought.

Duncan Deuchar, 75, of Ayr, said: “Like many others, I try and park outside the town centre and mostly use TK Maxx as it’s free.

“It doesn’t surprise me that the council is making so much – the cost of parking in the town is extortionate and that’s the real problem.”

Blackney Chambers, 88, said: “The car parks around town still seem to be choc- a- bloc, so people are obviously prepared to pay the money.”

But Ronnie McLennan, 73, of Ayr said: “The council should be hanging their heads in shame at what they charge people.

“Then you get taxis parked all over the place on double yellows and nothing seems to be done about that.”

And Ayr dairy guru, Dr Adnan Tamime, 74, said: “There’s also an issue with people not using disabled badges properly, which leaves a big problem for finding spaces.”
