Main Street is centre of digital plan

Town has vision for the future

- Stuart Wilson

A digital transformation of Prestwick Main Street is to form a bold new vision for the town.

Community leaders want free public WiFi and “smarter use of public space” to provide the cornerstone of their plan.

Proposals, seen by the Ayrshire Post, will be submitted to a nationwide contest run by Scotland’s Towns Partnership.

Town councillor, Hugh Hunter, and community council stalwart, Norrie Smith, are leading the project.

Cllr Hunter said: “The community recognises that the best way to achieve change is by partnership working.

“All of us here want the best for Prestwick and to build on the vibrancy already created within the town.

“Initiatives like these give us the perfect chance to show off what we have and lay out a vision for where we want to go next.

“For us, building an exciting future for Prestwick involves that digital transformation.

“Imagine arriving in the town and being able to switch on your phone to find you are instantly connected to Prestwick’s very own free WiFi signal.”

It’s understood development of a free app for the town, with an events guide and weather updates, is also part of early planning.

Hugh added: “These are all just ideas and the competition is very much about prestige.

“But winning it would make access to funding streams a lot easier and therefore the development of the town would be boosted.

“Things like electronic charging points for wheelchairs and making best use of our available space in the street are all possibilities.

“The great thing is how positive this is for the town and hopefully we can get everyone moving in the same direction.”
