Book Week welcomes distinguished guests

- Stuart Wilson

One of Scotland’s leading crime fiction writers and a high profile poet are heading for South Ayrshire to bring their work to life for Book Week 2017.

Louise Welsh and Alan Riach will head for the region as part of this year’s festival, which celebrates reading and the wide- range of services available in our libraries. Book Week Scotland is a celebration of books and reading which this year takes place from Monday, November 27 to Sunday, December 3.

During the event, people of all ages and walks of life will come together in libraries, schools, community venues and workplaces to share and enjoy books and reading.

Other highlights include a literary themed film- making workshop at the Carnegie Library and an introduction to ‘ Mindfulness’ at Prestwick Library.

Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council’s tourism spokesman, said: “Book Week gives people a great excuse to take time out to take a closer look at what’s happening in their local library.

“Many of this year’s events, including the headliner with Louise Welsh and Alan Riach, are free to attend; with the programme bringing people together in libraries to experience a broad range of discussions and guests.

“We’re committed to making cultural events like these accessible to people in South Ayrshire and I’d urge anyone with a curious mind to sign- up and help support Book Week 2017.”
