JUST LIKE THE GOOD OLD DAYS
McCall hails fans for roaring Ayr on to rampant win over their title rivals
Ian McCall hailed Ayr’s fans for turning back the clock as his rampant Honest Men sizzled on Tuesday night.
A thumping 3- 0 win over Raith pushed United three points clear at the top of League One, albeit with a game more played.
Ayr have now scored an astonishing 59 goals and the season is only four months old.
After another joyous night under the lights, elated boss McCall said: “I want to say thanks to the Somerset Road end. The atmosphere was just like the old days — absolutely fantastic.”
Lawrence Shankland’s tenth goal from nine games, a sublime effort from Robbie Crawford and Craig Moore’s 13th of the season sealed a runaway win.
It should have been more but Michael Moffat uncharacteristically skied a penalty high over.
McCall revealed: “We set up in a certain way because we felt Raith’s threats were Lewis Vaughan and Bobby Bar r and we nullified that.
“It could have been a comfortable win if Moffat had scored his penalty — it was possibly the worst I’ve ever seen at Somerset!
“The third goal put a fairer reflection on the scoreline as it was a fantastic team goal.
“I thought Robbie Crawford was a level above everybody in that first half — he was absolutely superb.”
The three- man strike force of Shankland, Moore and Moffat have now scored 31 goals between them. Fans are rolling back the years and comparing them with the glory days of Templeton,
Sludden and
Walker under Ally MacLeod. Jamie Adams will be rested for Saturday’s Scottish Cup trip to Banks O’Dee and the following week’s trip to Alloa as McCall won’t risk him on an astro pitch.
He will be the only absentee as McCall won’t take any chances against the North Superleague champions who have already seen off Linlithgow, Huntly and Selkirk.
Ayr are into evens from 6/ 4 for the title with McBookie.
