Remembrance Day respects
Towns across South Ayrshire fall silent for war victims
Hundreds of people in South Ayrshire joined the nation to remember those that have lost their lives in World Wars and in other conflicts on Sunday.
With members of our Armed Forces currently on active service and with some having made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, this was an opportunity to remember them and civilians who have also lost their lives.
There were Acts of Remembrance taking place across South Ayrshire on Sunday including major events at Ayr, Prestwick, Troon, Girvan and Maybole.
In Ayr, a short service was led by Rev David Gemmell at the war memorial, Wellington Square at 12.15pm.
Wreaths of red poppies were laid, followed by a two- minute silence, the sounding of the Last Post and Reveille and the National Anthem.
A short ceremony took place at the War Memorial, Wellington Square, Ayr on Saturday at 10.45am to mark Armistice Day.
Provost Helen Moonie said this week: “We should never forget those who have given their lives so that others can have a better future and it was wonderful to see so many people come together across South Ayrshire to pay their respects on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
“With so many parts of the world still caught up in terror and conflict, it’s more important than ever to show our support for our servicemen and women – wherever they are – and to reflect and remember those who have gone before.
“Our motto is ne’er forget the people and it’s clear that’s a sentiment that resonates throughout South Ayrshire.”
