Help the Greyhound Awareness League to rehome more dogs

-

Since 1998, the Greyhound Awareness League ( GAL) has been dedicated to rescuing and re- homing ex- racing greyhounds, ex- working lurchers.

Next year the charity celebrates 20 years of rehoming thousands of sighthounds.

The dedicated volunteers make sure these dogs are cared for and fostered until they find a permanent home with a forever family.

All the dogs that come into GAL’s care are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and thoroughly checked over by a vet before being considered for rehoming. £ 7 feeds one dog for one week £ 10 approx pays for a kennel for a night £ 30 approx pays for one dog to get vaccinated And £ 180 approx pays for a dog to be neutered The Greyhound Awareness League works tirelessly to raise public awareness of the plight of the retired greyhound.

The charity encourages members of the public to meet and hopefully adopt greyhounds and lurchers and to dispel many of the myths surrounding these beautiful, gentle dogs.

GAL is a non- profit making organisation, run entirely by volunteers achieving charity status in 2001.

You can help boost the charity and buy some fantastic stocking fillers too at their Christmas Fayre taking place on Sunday, December 3 at Larkhall Leisure Centre from 12pm tp 4pm.

The army of volunteers will also be hitting Glasgow’s Buchanan Street on Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17 where you can meet some greyhounds and the team and find out more about the charity’s work.

Once a month they host a greyhound walk where owners meet up and prove they have paw power - anyone is invited to go along and meet some new four legged friends.

And for some of the lazier dogs, they can hang around for cuddles in the car park and a chance to chat to some of GAL’s representatives.

The next walk is on Sunday, December 10 in Strathclyde Park at 11am.

Denise McGranaghan who founded the charity said: “Like all animal charities, GAL relies on the generosity of the public to continue its work. GAL doesn’t employ any staff - everyone is a volunteer - so every pound helps a GAL hound.

“These dogs make great family pets and it’s hard not to fall in love with them.”
